If you’ve got a website that you use to make money, then it’s very important to always be online. With that being said, how many of you are actually using a monitoring solution? Probably a very small percentage. If you’re a small business with a small budget just starting off, I’d recommend a service like Pingdom.com. They offer a very affordable solution (starting at $10/month) to provide you with some basic yet important monitoring.
If you’re a larger company evaluating monitoring solutions, then you should look at Hyperic. They provide application and systems monitoring solutions for small to enterprise-level environments. Their open-source version is free but limited vs their enterprise edition.
Since I use Pingdom, I highly recommend them for small businesses or just personal sites (they have a simple free version too). One of my sites that provides a vast array of blogger templates and wordpress themes occasionally goes down because of such large levels of traffic. That’s when I get an email sent directly to my iPhone telling me the site is down. I hate getting those emails but I can sleep at night because Pingdom provides me piece of mind.
